The Normandie Casino Poker Room

Overview - CLOSED

Part of The Normandie Casino

The Normandie Casino is Southern California's oldest casino.  It's not as large as some of the other Los Angeles rooms, but it has been recently renovated and offers a good selection of lower limit action.  The games are mostly limit, but there is a $1/2 NL game with a $300 max buy-in that is spread most evenings after 7pm.  For those NL players looking for a great action game be sure to stop by on most weekend nights for a wild and loose $2/5 game with a $300 minimum buy-in and no maximum buy-in.  The play at this game has been known to resemble a much higher stakes game because of the no maximum buy-in.

Normandie now offers a Late Night Tournament with a $2k guarantee that's held most nights and weekends at 10:15p.  In addition, on Friday nights they run a Ladies night $2k guarantee tourney at 7p hosted by Barbara Enright.  All tournaments are $50 buy-in, $10 entry fee with free food and soft drinks included.

The Normandie has recently installed flatscreen TVs and an automated waitlist.  There is a snack area, a gift shop and restaurant with reasonable prices and good food as well as a fairly large showroom.  It reminded us of the old Las Vegas showrooms.

Impressions: I play limit hold'em and like coming here. I usually see the same people and the games are good and most of my sessions are profitable. Guys like to call down with 2nd pair and even A high type hands. They just never believe me. They have been renovating the room quite a bit over the last few years and its actually very nice.
Atmosphere: The atmosphere is good. The room is pretty large and spacious. The tables are modern and spread apart a comfortable distance.
Dealers: They hire good dealers. Very friendly.
Food: Good service and they are very free with the booze.
Service: They have a central location for getting on the tables. The lists are kept on an electronic system.

Impressions: I like this room. I play here quite a bit. The staff and dealers are all very friendly, the regulars are mostly good players, but there is plenty of money to be made here. I play mostly limit 8/16 which is the big game here.
Atmosphere: It's a pretty large room and the tables, chairs are all in great shape. The room looks old from the outside, but has been updated on the inside. It's very clean, has plenty of flat screen TV's, electronic waiting boards, good food and most of all there is plenty of money to be made here.

Dealers: The dealers are great.
Food: There is a restaurant and good food is served at the table. Nothing fancy, but reasonable prices, great comps and plenty of options.
Service: There is usually only one table at the 8/16 level with more at the lower levels. However, it doesn't take long to get a table. Worst case I just play at 4/8 until a seat opens at 8/16.
Comps: They do have bad beat jackpots and a comp program. There are two bad beat jackpots. A progressive one and non-progressive one. I believe the progressive one requires a full house of A's with at least T's being beaten, and the regular requires any full house with A's.

Impressions: I really like this room. It's pretty close to my house and one of the first places I every played poker. In fact, I remember playing in a $2/4 limit game about 10 years ago when I first moved to Los Angeles from New York. Had only played poker in a casino one other time in Vegas, and I rarely played Hold'em. Hadn't read any books at that point and didn't know much about the game. I was lost, and did lose. But I had a good time and felt very comfortable in the room.
Atmosphere: Nothing fancy, but it's very clean and safe. I played in a charity tournament about two months ago and they seem to be making a big effort to modernize the room. They are also spreading a lot more no limit games and featuring lots of weekly tournaments.
Dealers: Very friendly dealers. They seemed to really appreciate getting tips.
Food: Great service, good food.
Service: Very little wait and it moves quickly.
Comps: Lots of jackpots, good comp program.
