Update: July 2024: The Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission (NRGC) approved a request to transfer a horse racetrack license from Fairplay Park in Hastings roughly 200 miles west to a new facility in Ogalla. The Lake Mac Casino Resort & Racetrack project involves an investment of $100 million and is planned for a 178-acre site near Interstate 80 and Highway 26.

A $100 million Ogallala, Nebraska casino proposal, Lake Mac Casino Resort & Racetrack, for a 174-acre site south of Interstate 80 and near Lake McConaughy,  was approved by city and county officials in late June 2022. The plan was developed in anticipation of the state legislature's authorization of additional casino licenses for racetracks beyond the original six approved in the 2020 voter referendum. Hastings Exposition and Racing is partnering with Iowa-based Elite Casino Resorts, LLC on the project, the latter of which has filed a casino application to build the Grand Island Casino Resort at Fonner Park in Grand Island.

The proposed Lake Mac Casino Resort will feature a 37,000-square-foot casino floor with 650 slot machines, 14 live dealer table games, and a sportsbook. Additional amenities include a hotel, convention center, multiple dining options, rooftop restaurant, RV lot, truck stop and travel center.

There are currently six racetracks in Nebraska that are eligible for gaming facilities, with one additional possible location in the western region. The state legislature has directed the Nebraska State Racing and Gaming Commission to conduct economic and social impact studies to determine eligible sites for new racetracks, which must be completed no later than January 1, 2025.
